I met Mark on a rocky beach beside the Xibun river where I like to walk to go swimming on a hot day. Mark likes to make a little fire on the rocks to keep the bugs away while he makes colourful belts out of rope to sell to people. While he makes his belts he likes to smoke a little spliff and drink his own sort of wine called “loony” which he let me try. Loony looks like dirty, cloudy pond water and tastes a little like stomach bile mixed with red wine vinegar. It really burns the throat on its way down and is the single most foul beverage I have ever consumed.Mark is a very chill guy, kind and generous, polite and friendly. He didn’t mind if I took some portraits of him. Here is one I liked. I would like to think that the late afternoon sun was still high enough to produce a hard light that lends itself to the heat conveyed in this image. A look of deep concentration etched into his face as blows the smoke from “lee bitta herb” out of his nose. I let his face and his action fill the frame and provide the story.Thanks!
